As we've only got the lease on this flat until September, this summer is going to be spent in part on moving out of the first proper home we've had together. The sentimental aspects are not lost on either of us, and aren't exactly muted by the fact that we'll be moving out to spend the next year living miles apart.
We're also currently spending hours packing up non-essential items ahead of time, from which I've learned a few things:
1) An item that has not seen the light of day in months will be necessary approximately five minutes after it has been securely duct-taped into a storage box.
2) One hour of properly organising and tidying away one's property somehow creates a much messier state than a month of just letting things live wherever they land.
3) Just because you think you don't own much doesn't mean you shouldn't obtain at least 10 boxes before you start packing.
4) Even supposedly tidy people accumulate a lot more unnecessary crap than anyone can justify.
As a result, we are living in a strange arrangement of furnishings surrounded by storage-box forts and most likely will be until we finally move. Thankfully, however, the early stage of packing (throwing away 3 years' worth of unneeded paper, boxes, bits of plastic and other "hold onto this just in case" items), during which the flat appeared to have been the home of an epileptic Edward Scissorhands, seems to be over.
Incidentally - we still haven't even started on 2 of the 5 rooms...
