Scamper, my pretties! Scamper!

We had a "lab animals" rotation yesterday - definitely one of the more amusing ones.

I'd already been considering NVS (Named Vet. Surgeon, looking after the health etc. of lab animals) as a possible future career, so it was strange to be talked to about a lot of things I'd already read and understood myself - rotations are usually an in-at-the-deep-end learning experience.

We spent a bit of time seeing the facilities and practicing our lab rat handling, all while kitted out in extremely stylish scrubs, hairnets and booties. At the end, four of us went on to see the marmoset rooms.

It turns out that they're a lot smaller than I'd thought they were, that their days-old babies are incredibly well-disguised and tiny, that the cages were more like big adventure playgrounds (I stood in one for a bit), and that marmosets really, really like marshmallows.

Nothing makes your day quite like feeding treats to the blackbird-sized monkey sitting on your shoulder, except maybe the amusement you get when it tries and fails to steal your glasses.
