Next year I'll be in K7, Whewell's Court.
I was really, really set on having one of the rooms in N or O, but I suppose anything in the region of £800 *this* year will be unaffordable next year, when they come up with the new rent prices. In the end I decided to forgo the 8 remaining N and O rooms in favour of K staircase, since I remembered it being nice.
[sigh]
The room that I picked (I checked afterwards) actually wasn't the one I thought I was picking, but the sitting room/study part of the set is about the size of my current room, and the bedroom roughly the same size or larger. The toilets are nearby, since there's one by K9 and 10 (James is living on the floor above mine - yay), and although I was mildly annoyed that out of the choice of two rooms that I had (4 and 7), I'd managed to pick the one without a kitchen included as part of the set, the current owner told me that it's the only room in the staircase without an attached kitchen, which means that the kitchen about 3 feet from the front door is for my use only (no one else needs it). It is by no means a glamorous kitchen like this year's - no oven, one gas hob, and dark since the window is tiiiiny - but it does have a microwave AND MY OWN FRIDGE, for me and no one else, which is a novelty.
I've learned during the course of room-hunting that it's possible to buy mini-ovens. They even sell them in Lakeland Ltd., but I think I might look for one on eBay at the start of next year. Need oven. I would have made BBI/T-standard kitchens a higher priority on my list of things while room-hunting if I hadn't liked the Whewell's Court rooms so much.
Of course, I may just hijack the ones in Blue Boar T, since I will have contacts there. :P
This is starting to sound very negative. I'm basically just annoyed with myself for forgetting which room was which, and a bit pissed off that I had to make the choice to turn down rooms I liked rather than have them all gone before I got there . This may sound like a strange statement, but if that had happened it would have been a case of "oh well, nothing I can do to change it" followed by moving on. In this case I've already wondered several times if I should have chosen differently - not because I think the room is bad (it's not), but because I was aware that I could have chosen differently.
The room itself has a lot going for it: gets a good amount of light, reasonable size, good view, decent furniture (desk, armchairs, cupboardy things etc.), an outer door (yes, I'm sad for thinking outer doors are cool, but none of my rooms so far have had one), kitchen of my own and toilet nearby, and it's right beside the Bridge St. gate, meaning it's in the staircase closest to street access, Sainsbury's, the bike shed, and (useful) the Overseas Storage room. It's close to my lectures, even if the damn one-way system means I'll have an extra minute or so in my journey compared to the people who'll be in Blue Boar Court again. It's in college, meaning that I can make old-fashioned jaunts to the college bar whenever people are up for it, and more importantly, meaning that I don't have a tiresomely long trip ahead of me any time I want to visit friends in their rooms (Cez and Ana are in BB T next year; Blaise and James are in Whewell's next year too, although I can't really remember where everyone's living next year, so someone should remind me). :)
But yeah. This is me venting. I'm feeling a bit disconnected - if you've ever felt like you're watching yourself think, you have an idea of what I mean... problem is that I always feel I'm watching my own thoughts, so imagine a whole other level of that.
I should work. Or sleep. Or something.
This really is too long.
